A bit of History:

The original Glug Glug jug was made in Staffordshire over 100 years ago by Thomas Forester & Son during the late 1800’s; and was adapted by the Dartmouth Pottery to look like a fish and named the Gurgling Fish Jug. The Gurgle in the name came from the noise made when pouring (see the video below) and Dartmouth Pottery was one of the most famous manufacturers of this gurgly jug, but sadly closed in 2002.

Wade Ceramics bought the jug mould for these gorgeous pots and continued to make the jugs until they went into administration and closed in 2022. The Gluggle Jug Factory then bought all the IP design rights, re-employed the staff and re-opened the factory so that today, you can still buy this super cool British icon, 100% made in the UK!

The Glug glug sound:

You can’t help but wonder about the inspiration behind the gurgling sound. Some believe it mimics the sound of a fish swimming underwater, while others suggest it’s simply a nod to the animated nature of rivers and streams. Regardless of its origins, the Gluggle Jug has certainly made a splash in the world of ceramics!

When the Queen and Prince Philip visited Britannia Naval College in 1958, they were presented with a pair of the Gluggle Jugs. The Head of the College at that time, commissioned the production of the jugs and provided them with a royal seal and date. This ensured the popularity of the water jug and it quickly became a collector’s item. Since then, the jugs have been an iconic British design piece bringing a cool addition to households all over the world.

In the 20th century, the gluggle jug transcended its utilitarian roots and became a symbol of craftsmanship. Artisans began producing limited edition and hand-painted gluggle jugs, turning them into coveted collectibles. Today, enthusiasts and collectors alike treasure these jugs not just for their functionality but as pieces of art that encapsulate a unique moment in ceramic history.

The original design (check the stamp underneath) is still a quirky and fashionable home accessory today. With its choice of colour glazes and multi-functional uses, it makes a fantastic gift or present for anyone! Use it as a water jug, vase or simply an ornament… The Gluggle Jug will hold its own or look great with others… check it out on our Instagram here.
